Kano Abattoir Limited, located in Dala Local Government Area, Kano State, is one of Nigeria’s oldest meat processing facilities, established in 1963 under the native authority of Premier Ahmadu Bello. Now privately owned, the abattoir slaughters over 500 animals daily, including cattle, goats, sheep, and camels, serving Kano’s 44 local government areas, neighboring states, and international markets. Despite its economic significance, employing over 80,000 people across the meat value chain, the facility faces challenges like inadequate infrastructure, unhygienic practices, and limited space for the state’s growing population. Veterinary inspections ensure meat safety, rejecting unfit animals, but issues like antibiotic residues and zoonotic disease risks persist due to poor waste management and outdated facilities.
